Stephen Joseph is a recruitment entrepreneur, salesman, and author with over a decade of experience building, scaling, and exiting specialist recruitment businesses in the UK education sector. He cut his teeth as a trainee recruiter, learning the fundamentals of sales, delivery, and resilience at the sharp end of the market. During his early career, Stephen went on to play a key role in helping two separate recruitment companies achieve multi-million-pound exits, experiences that exposed him to growth, pressure, and scale from the inside.
Across this period, he built multiple successful desks from the ground up and trained a wide range of trainee consultants — from first-time recruiters to high-performing billers.
The lessons learned during these formative years, both good and bad, became the foundation of his first book, Secure, Survive, Thrive, which focuses on building sustainable performance through strong habits, structure, and execution. Stephen later co-founded Principal Education and ExamInvigilation.co.uk, businesses known for combining commercial rigour with modern systems, compliance-led delivery, and a people-first culture. Starting from scratch, these ventures have grown into award-winning, multi-million-pound operations supplying teachers, support staff, and specialist exam personnel to schools and trusts across the UK.
During the start-up and scale-up of Principal, Stephen documented the realities of building a recruitment agency in real time — from cash flow and compliance to sales rhythm, hiring, and culture.
That journey is laid out in his second book, How to Start Your Own Recruitment Agency: 12 Months to £1 Million, a practical, no-nonsense guide for founders and early-stage agency owners.
